9th Week: Tabletop game

The Idea
Luckily this time I had some constrains. Make a game using Sticky notes.

Why this game?
I saw, this game makes player to think creatively (sometimes). And making long words is fun.

Game:

Use the Missing letters to form Words.

Players: 2

Setup:
Both players take Sticky notes (or some white papers) and different colored pens.

Progression of Play:

  1. Both players write 3 missing letters words on the notes.
    Ex: G _ E _ T,   R U _ _ S,    T H _ _ K. (For Player – 1)
(The words should of same length (Ex: 5) and the no. of missing letters (Ex: 2) should be same.)
  2. Then exchange the Sticky notes.
  3. Now find the Missing letters.
    Ex: G R E A T,   R U LE S,   T H I N K. (These are for Player – 2)
  4. The missing letters are: R, A, L, E, I, N. (For Player – 2)
  5. Now form the words using the Missing letters. One letter should be used only one time.
    Words: LANE, I, R.(Player – 2 has scored 4 points).
  6. The letters I, R can be used for next turns.
  7. Same goes other player.

Resolution:
The first player who scores 20 points wins the game.

Iteration:

  • Each player had A – Z chart, in which each word can picked once in one turn if necessary.
  • After making the word in each round both players had to reveal the word.
  • The remaining letters can be used for next turns and the player need not to show the remaining letters to his opponents.

What went right?
Making the game playable was very fast. This gives me time to iterate the game many times, not just thinking about ideas like last week.

 What went wrong?
Play testing: Play testing was done online and onsite. I am unable do onsite play testing effectively. Onsite was done only 2-3 times. But these little play tests gave me a good amount of feedback that improves the game.

What I have learned?
It is good to make tabletop games especially in Game a week. It breaks your routine style of work and it is great if you think you are following same pattern of work every week. Most importantly it gives you a lot time to iterate the game than making it. When your schedules are tight try making a tabletop game.
